The Rise of Fungal Flora in COVID-19 Patients Recorded by Rospotrebnadzor

Rospotrebnadzor specialists have recorded an increase in fungal flora in coronavirus hospital intensive care units. This was reported by Izvestia.

According to the outlet, this is likely due to the pathogenic properties of the coronavirus. The use of certain medications may also play a role. The most commonly identified fungus is Candida albicans, which is considered the causative agent of candidiasis fungal infection.

The media notes that patients infected with the coronavirus should be carefully examined. Excessive use of antifungal agents can lead to resistance in pathogens. Moreover, this fungal infection is often observed in patients with immune deficiency, affecting the blood and reproductive organs. In the case of the coronavirus, the target of the fungal infection is the lungs.

Elena Lazareva, a leading researcher in the infectious pathology clinical department of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, informed the media that Candida albicans has been detected in a total of 617 patients across two hospitals.
