Man Arrested in Tbilisi Who Hid Saakashvili in His Home
A resident of Tbilisi has been detained in Georgia for hiding the country's former president Mikheil Saakashvili in his apartment, as reported by tvzvezda.ru, citing information from the Georgian State Security Service.
On Friday, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced that Saakashvili had been arrested in his homeland. Previously, the former president had stated his intention to return to the country for the upcoming local government elections.
Saakashvili was under internal surveillance in Georgia, facing several criminal charges, and officials had repeatedly declared that he would be arrested as soon as he crossed the border. He was sentenced in absentia for the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valeri Gelashvili. In the first case, he received a three-year prison sentence, and in the second, six years.
Additionally, Saakashvili is connected to the dispersal of an opposition rally on November 7, 2007, the attacks on Imedi TV, and the misappropriation of funds from the state budget. All courts continue to examine these cases.
