Lukashenko Reveals When He Will Be Ready to Leave Office
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has indicated when he might be ready to leave his position. In an interview with American CNN, he promised that he does not intend to remain president 'until death.'
“I swear that I will not be president until death. I swear. Everything will depend on the situation in Belarus,” his words are quoted by the BELTA news agency.
He emphasized that he would step down if the 'Western sponsors' do not interfere in Belarusian affairs and if the country feels secure as an independent sovereign state.
“But if you dare to intervene in our activities once again, as you did last year, it will be bad. It will be like you think now,” he said.
Lukashenko also stated that Minsk is ready for serious rapprochement with Moscow and, in the case of external aggression, could even turn into a single military base for Russia and Belarus.
