Russia Responds to Destruction of Armenian Marshal Sergey Khudyakov's Monument by Azerbaijan

The Russian Ministry of Defense has responded, stating that it shares the concerns of citizens regarding the preservation of historical and cultural monuments in the territory of the Republic of Artsakh for future generations.

“This issue is under the attention of the highest leadership of the Russian Federation, which attaches special importance to the implementation of the provisions of the trilateral statement made on November 9, 2020, by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, and the President of the Russian Federation. The Russian peacekeeping contingent and the Humanitarian Response Center are directly involved in solving the problem, working in close coordination with the competent authorities of the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as with international authorized organizations,” the response states, as reported by 1lurer.am.

In a related inquiry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation also responded, emphasizing that Russia pays special attention to the preservation of historical, architectural, and religious heritage in the region. Moscow bases its stance on the belief that these monuments belong to all residents of Artsakh and adjacent areas, regardless of their national affiliation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has also assured that it is documenting all cases of the destruction of monuments to Soviet political figures, including the monument to Khudyakov, and expresses hope that the UNESCO mission will be able to visit the region soon.
