VIDEO: Taliban Beat Journalists Covering Women's Protest
Two Afghan journalists were beaten at the police station after covering a women's protest in Kabul, where they were arrested by the Taliban, their editor has said.
Zaki Daryabi, founder and editor-in-chief of Etilaat Roz, posted images of the two male journalists on social media, one of whom had large red bruises on his back and legs, while the other had similar marks on his shoulder and arm. Both men also had bruises and cuts on their faces.
Daryabi stated that the beating sends a chilling message to the media in Afghanistan, where independent press, largely funded by Western donors, has thrived over the past 20 years. “Five of our colleagues spent over four hours in investigative isolation, and during those four hours, our two colleagues were brutally beaten and tortured,” he told Reuters.
