US State Department Outlines Conditions for Recognizing Taliban Rule
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has outlined the conditions that the Taliban must meet in order to gain legitimacy and support following the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. This was stated on the department's website.
According to reports, Blinken emphasized that the US will engage with the Taliban solely based on its national interests.
“The Taliban seeks international legitimacy and support. Our message is clear: any legitimacy and support must be earned. The Taliban can achieve this by fulfilling its promises and obligations regarding freedom of travel, respecting the fundamental rights of the Afghan people, including women and minorities, fulfilling their duties in the fight against terrorism, and forming a government that meets the demands of the Afghan people and expresses their aspirations,” Blinken said, adding that the US is starting a new phase of engagement with Afghanistan.
