What is the official position of Iran regarding the Armenian-Azerbaijani tense situation

Official Tehran hopes that the recent disagreements in the border areas of the Syunik region, especially along the Kapan-Goris road, will be resolved in a manner that does not disrupt the goals of reopening and unblocking transportation routes. This was stated by the Iranian Embassy in Armenia in response to an inquiry from Armenpress.

The Iranian embassy stated that since the issue of new border demarcations between Armenia and Azerbaijan came to the agenda, Iran has been confident that the parties will urgently reach a mutually acceptable solution that ensures the normal course of relations between Armenia and its neighbors with minimal consequences. They also recalled that the reopening and unblocking of communication routes in the region has been one of the main points of the trilateral statements adopted in the Armenia-Russia-Azerbaijan format.

Tehran hopes that the disagreements related to the overall demarcation of borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be resolved in a peaceful atmosphere, without any tension or disruption in communication routes. “We hope that the parties will resolve the recent disagreements arising in the border areas of the Syunik region, especially along the Kapan-Goris road, in a manner that does not hinder the goals of reopening and unblocking transportation routes. Unfortunately, in the last two days, we have witnessed that traffic along this route has been disrupted due to recent events in the Syunik region, which has created problems not only for the normal life of the Armenian civilian population but also for several Iranian cargo vehicles transporting goods from Iran to Armenia. Given the complexity of the situation on this 21-kilometer section of the road, it is required that the parties make efforts within the framework of friendship principles to ensure the normal course of communication and traffic until a precise and specific situation is achieved in this regard. Therefore, we still hope that the disagreements related to the overall demarcation of borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be resolved in a peaceful atmosphere, without any tension or disruption in communication routes,” the Iranian embassy's response letter stated.

Regarding the importance of ensuring the normal flow of communication, the Iranian side emphasizes that they have consistently expressed their views to the relevant authorities of Armenia. “We are confident that parallel to the ongoing negotiations on resolving the disagreements regarding the operation of the Kapan-Goris route, works to improve and develop alternative routes will also proceed rapidly, so that conditions return to normal for both the citizens of Armenia and our commercial relations with Armenia,” they stated from the Iranian embassy.
