Pashinyan Discusses Azerbaijani Provocation on Goris-Kapan Highway: What is the Government's Position?
The closure of the Goris-Kapan highway by Azerbaijan contradicts the agreements reached in December 2020. This was stated by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during today's government session.
“I hope that the situation will be resolved shortly. Politically, it is clear to me that this action was taken to undermine our proposed peace agenda and to discredit it. Azerbaijan's behavior indicates that such incidents could happen again,” said Pashinyan.
He emphasized that our forces must be vigilant and attentive. On the other hand, Armenia also needs strong nerves, as the peace agenda must be developed.
Pashinyan noted that the situation regarding the roads in Syunik was not unforeseen, and during this time, work has been carried out on the formation of new infrastructures. However, according to him, the opening of the Goris-Kapan road could be a very good symbol of regional stability.
“The Azerbaijani side claims that their action is related to the fact that an Azerbaijani officer was stabbed the day before. Our preliminary checks have shown that the Armenian side has no connection to the incident, and we are ready for a joint investigation with Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan on this issue,” Pashinyan stated.
He also mentioned that the reconstruction of the Tatev-Agvank road should be completed by the end of the year, and the construction of other planned sections should also be finalized.
Addressing the topic of regional security, Pashinyan noted that there are certain positive signals from Turkey. He concluded his remarks by stating that these signals will be assessed, and positive signals will be responded to with positive signals.
