BIDEN ADDRESSES SITUATION IN AFGHANISTAN
US President Joe Biden returned to the White House from Camp David yesterday evening to deliver a special address to the nation regarding the situation in Afghanistan. The President stated that Washington began this military campaign 20 years ago, with the clear goal of punishing and dismantling those responsible for the September 11 attacks in 2001, and that mission has been fully accomplished.
Biden attributed the failure of the Afghan government to the lack of will among Afghan soldiers. “State leaders have left the country, the army has surrendered, and American service members should not fight and die in a war for Afghanistan if the Afghan soldiers do not want to fight,” Biden said. The US has provided over a trillion dollars to Afghanistan, supplied arms and equipment, and even paid the salaries of the soldiers. A well-armed army of up to 300,000 is a formidable force, larger than some of our NATO allies.
The US President does not regret the decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan. American diplomats, translators, and technical staff will also be evacuated to avoid becoming targets for Taliban revenge.
Biden referred to this as the longest bloody war in US history. The situation has become relatively manageable at Kabul airport, although there are large crowds of Afghans both inside the airport and in the surrounding areas, desperate to leave the country at any cost.
According to Reuters, Turkey has abandoned plans to take over the management of Kabul airport, as previously announced by the Turkish president.
