40 People Die at Kabul Airport Due to Stampede and Gunfire
Since August 16, at least 40 people have died at Kabul International Airport due to stampedes and gunfire. TOLO News reported this on Tuesday, citing a commander from the Taliban radical movement present at the airport.
According to this Taliban member, people died due to the "use of firearms by foreign forces", as well as the stampede. He urged the public not to come to the airport and "not to believe the false news that it is possible to fly abroad."
As citizens arriving at the airport explained to the television, they hope to leave the country after hearing that several Kabul residents managed to fly out the day before without visas and passports. Additionally, due to the prevailing uncertainty in the country, many women, panicked by the situation under the Taliban regime, are coming to the airport fearing for their wellbeing.
TOLO News notes that despite the Taliban's calls for people to stay home and the tragic deaths of those falling from the airplane chassis, on Monday, the crowd continues to arrive at the airport in hopes of leaving the country, as reported by TASS.
On Tuesday, the U.S. military resumed the evacuation of U.S. embassy personnel and Afghan nationals collaborating with American troops from Kabul.
