Statement from the ‘Hayastan’ and ‘Pativ Unem’ Factions
The ‘Hayastan’ and ‘Pativ Unem’ factions have issued a statement: ‘The Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan, led by Judge Anna Danibekyan, has decided to detain Armenian MP and candidate for the chairmanship of the Permanent Commission on Regional and Eurasian Integration, Armen Gevorgyan. It is not a secret that over the last three years, the current authorities have reached new heights of legal chaos. This includes the ongoing detention of our two fellow MPs from the National Assembly.
Article 94 of the Constitution guarantees the representative mandate of the MP. This is a direct obligation for MPs, stemming from their status. The same judge considered the absence of an MP at National Assembly sessions as respectable on August 3, yet with the same legal conditions regarding the convening of National Assembly sessions as mandated by the Constitution, the judge has adopted a completely opposite approach.
With such behavior, the judge has essentially decided to interfere with the normal operations of the National Assembly and the very representative mandate of the MP, which cannot have any relation to legal processes. We call on the Supreme Judicial Council to pay attention to the conduct of the judge of the Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan. We find it necessary to emphasize that Armen Gevorgyan has always maintained respect for the court, and any circumstance has been properly communicated to the court in advance.’
