Armenia Has a Historic Opportunity to Become Part of the North-South Transport Corridor: Armen Gevorgyan

Peace in the region must be long-lasting and dignified, with development opportunities being advantageous for all countries, and the interests of all actors in the region should be commensurate, historically justified, and positive.

As reported by Armenpress, this statement was made by Armen Gevorgyan, a member of the 'Armenia' faction and a candidate for the chair of the Permanent Commission on Regional and Eurasian Integration, from the podium of the National Assembly.

"Today, Armenia is under strong pressure to open regional communication routes. If the current trends continue, various external players' interests will clash in Armenian territory. This reality shapes new regional risks for us. To avoid further complicating this situation, we must act openly and transparently and clarify whether there are still undisclosed commitments or promises with external forces regarding regional unblocking," said Gevorgyan.

According to the MP, even in the event of the unblocking of routes, it is possible to form a favorable agenda for the interests of Artsakh and Armenia, for example, by setting the goal of making Armenia a transit country.

"If the current authorities have already undertaken commitments regarding the aforementioned and are heading down that path, then it is the parliament's task to utilize all available tools to mitigate the consequences of that process and make it favorable for the Armenian people, and, if necessary, to prevent dangerous trends," emphasized Armen Gevorgyan.

In the MP's view, Armenia has a historic opportunity to become part of the North-South transport corridor by constructing the Kajaran tunnel, as well as through the mobilization of forces to take practical steps towards activating the free trade regime with Iran.
