The World Has Entered a Period of Real Danger Due to Coronavirus, Says WHO Chief

Humanity has entered a "period of real danger," and many of the successes achieved in the fight against coronavirus are currently "undergoing erosion." This was stated by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during a press conference held in Geneva, according to Tert.am.

"The world is now in a period of real danger. Many of the achievements we have made are now undergoing erosion," the source quotes the WHO chief as saying.

Earlier today, it was reported that the number of coronavirus cases worldwide has exceeded 200 million. As Ghebreyesus emphasized, the increase in virus transmission is facilitated by a rise in social interactions, inconsistent measures in the health and public sectors, as well as "unequal" vaccination rates.

Ghebreyesus reminded that more than 80 percent of the vaccines against coronavirus have been distributed in high and middle-income countries. According to him, the financial resources necessary to combat coronavirus exceed the available resources. In 2021, the strategic plan to combat the pandemic has a shortfall of $900 million.
