Existing Vaccines Do Not Protect Against COVID-19 Delta Variant

British scientists have concluded that the effectiveness of the coronavirus vaccines used in their country has decreased due to the spread of the Delta variant. They believe that new vaccines need to be developed and minors should be vaccinated. This information was reported by Bloomberg agency, as noted by Sputnik Armenia.

Just a month ago, vaccine effectiveness was at 64%, but it has now dropped to 49%. According to scientists, the third wave of the pandemic in the UK is linked to the spread of the Delta variant, which is the most contagious strain of the coronavirus. At the same time, it is noted that the administered vaccines continue to provide a fairly high degree of protection. Vaccinated individuals are nearly three times less likely to become infected with Delta. Furthermore, those who get infected with the coronavirus show significantly fewer symptoms.

During the third wave of the virus, a large number of young Britons aged 5-24 have been infected. This underscores the necessity of vaccinating minors. According to scientists, if adolescents aged 12-17 are vaccinated, it could help avert an autumn outbreak of the disease.

Last week, the government advisory group on emergency situations announced that coronavirus vaccination will be maintained for many years. Experts believe that the protection provided by the vaccine will weaken over time, necessitating revaccination.
