Scientists Discover Flower That May Help Treat COVID-19

The journal Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology reports that the plant Nigella sativa (black cumin) from North Africa and Western Asia may be useful in the treatment of COVID-19. This was conveyed by Sputnik Armenia.

It is noted that the plant contains thymoquinone, which can bind to the coronavirus spike protein and hinder the development of pulmonary infections. “This substance can also block the cytokine storm that occurs in seriously ill patients hospitalized with COVID-19,” said the lead author of the study, Professor Kaniz Fatima Shah from Australia’s Catholic University.

The experts also discovered other beneficial properties of thymoquinone. In particular, it helps treat hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, as well as being effective in destroying golden staphylococcus.

Additionally, as an anti-inflammatory agent, this plant aids patients with allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, eczema, and osteoarthritis. Australian scientists have found that some peoples have used Nigella sativa seeds as a traditional remedy for various ailments, including inflammation and infections, for centuries.
