The information available about Karapetyan's biography on the Ministry of Defense's website is sparse. According to it, he served in the Armed Forces of Armenia from 1993 to 2018. During the April 2016 war, Karapetyan was the head of the intelligence department of the General Staff, and after the war, he was discharged from that position by a decree from then-President Serzh Sargsyan, only to later serve as the military attaché in Russia. Under the revolutionary government, Arshak Karapetyan first became a consultant to the Prime Minister, then the deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and on July 20, he was appointed as the deputy defense minister.
