The Bill Has Been Passed: Insults Will Become Criminally Punishable

The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia has adopted in its second reading and wholly the draft law proposed by the members of the ‘My Step’ faction, which suggests imposing penalties for causing serious insult to a person through insults or humiliating their dignity in a highly indecent manner.

The package of draft laws on amending the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia and the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia received 72 votes in favor during the voting in the National Assembly session.

Co-author Vladimir Vardanyan assures that the aim of the bill is not so much to hold accountable those who have utilized insults as a means of offense, but rather to serve a preventive purpose. He emphasizes that societal insults, as a more severe violation of dignity, should be eliminated.
