The Secretary General of CSTO on the Situation at the Armenia-Azerbaijan Border

The Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Stanislav Zas, expressed concern over the potential escalation of tensions in the South Caucasus.

“The danger of further escalation of tensions in the region raises serious concern, which could negatively affect the implementation of agreements made within the trilateral format. These agreements are enshrined in the statement made by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia on November 9, 2020,” said the CSTO Secretary General while commenting on the situation at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

A document published on the CSTO website notes that combat clashes occurred on the night of July 28, 2021, along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers of the Armenian armed forces and injuries to four others. Zas expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“The use of force is unacceptable. Political-diplomatic means should be solely used to resolve the discrepancies,” emphasized the CSTO Secretary General. He welcomed Russia's efforts aimed at stabilizing the regional situation.
