Martirosyan Defeats Turkish Chess Player, Sargsyan to Face Azerbaijani After Draw
The former champion of Armenia, Hayk Martirosyan, has advanced to the 1/32 stage of the World Chess Cup taking place in Sochi. In the second match of the 1/64 round, he achieved victory over Turkish Grandmaster Mustafa Yilmaz.
Current Armenian champion Hovhannes Gabrielyan and team member Gabriel Sargsyan have been eliminated from further competition. Gabrielyan lost to Egyptian Bassem Amin in a two-game micro-match (0.5:1.5), while Sargsyan was defeated by Indian Praggnanandhaa in both games.
Shant Sargsyan concluded his match against Azerbaijani Nijat Abasov with a draw and will play additional games against him.
Earlier, Armenian chess leader Levon Aronian was also knocked out of the World Cup. High fever and tonsillitis prevented him from competing.
The tournament began on July 12 and will conclude on August 6. Participants in the final of the World Cup will earn the right to compete in the Candidates Tournament.
