The Answer is Obvious: Lavrov on the Possibility of Deploying Russian Troops to Afghanistan
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, commenting on the possibility of deploying Russian troops to Afghanistan, stated that he considers the answer to this question to be obvious. This was announced by the head of the department during a lecture on "Russia's International Activities for the Development of Russian Regions" at the Far Eastern Federal University, as reported by RIA Novosti.
At the same time, Lavrov noted that in the event of militant attacks from Afghanistan on Tajikistan, the CSTO would immediately discuss the possibility of providing assistance to Dushanbe, TASS agency reports.
He emphasized that the disruption of Afghanistan's political life creates niches where militants are sent, not from the radical "Taliban" movement, but from the terrorist organization "Islamic State." At the same time, “Islamic State” is purposefully deploying its fighters in the north of the country, near the borders with Russia’s allies, the minister added.
As previously reported, Tajikistan has called on CSTO allies to assist in overcoming the challenges posed by Afghanistan. In this context, Tajikistan believes that the implementation of the decision adopted by the Collective Security Council on September 23, 2013, regarding assistance to the Republic of Tajikistan in strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border is highly relevant.
