When Will the First Session of the Newly Elected Parliament Be Convened?

After the extraordinary elections to the National Assembly, the first session of the newly elected parliament must take place, which, according to the Constitution, will mark the end of the powers of the current parliament. According to legislation, the first session of the National Assembly was scheduled to be convened on July 5. However, as is known, the "Hayastan" and "Pativ Unem" alliances have decided to appeal to the Constitutional Court regarding the results of the parliament elections. This means that the first session will not take place on July 5.

The Constitutional Court can make one of the following decisions: uphold the decision regarding the results of the National Assembly elections, annul the election results, annul the election results and establish the procedure for distributing mandates, or call for a second round of elections. The Court will make a decision on this matter within a 15-day timeframe, that is, by July 17.

According to experts, it is practically impossible to examine such a large volume case in less than 10 days, which means that if the results of the National Assembly elections are not annulled, even under the fastest examination at the Constitutional Court, the first session may take place on July 19 (which is almost unlikely) or the latest by July 26 (most likely by August 2).

Incidentally, on the same day, according to legislation, the President of Armenia will appoint the Prime Minister, after which the latter will have 15 days to form the government. If the Constitutional Court decides to conduct a second round of elections or to annul the election results, then the process of forming the new parliament will be delayed by at least one and a half to two months.
