Three Passenger Trains Delayed Due to Train Accident
In the Armavir region this morning, near the 36th kilometer of the Yerevan-Gyumri highway, close to the village of Zartonq, a collision occurred between a Yerevan-Gyumri passenger electric train carrying about 100 passengers and a Mercedes vehicle.
According to the information provided to Armenpress by the Public Relations and Media Department of the South Caucasus Railway (SCR), the railway crossing where the collision took place is equipped with a signaling system, including warning lights and audible signals, and road signs that are clearly visible from at least 300 meters away.
As a result of the collision, three passenger trains were delayed. The equipment at the crossing, the train, and the road signs were damaged.
"Despite the continuous measures taken by the South Caucasian Railway to ensure the safety of train traffic, railways have begun to face more frequent collisions due to violations of traffic rules by drivers at crossings. This, in turn, can lead to accidents, which pose a real threat to the safety of trains, cargo, and the lives and health of both passengers and participants in road traffic," the statement said.
The SCR reported that the number of transport accidents on the railway doubled in 2021 compared to the same period last year, reaching 9.
Once again, the SCR urged drivers to be particularly cautious and vigilant when crossing railways, proceeding only after ensuring that the crossing is clear and that no train is approaching. In case of possible danger, the train cannot stop immediately—the braking distance can range from 500 meters to 1 kilometer.
