Major Car Accident in Shirak: Vehicle Crashes into Concrete Barriers, Rolls Over, Casualties Reported
Today, June 10, a major car accident occurred in the Shirak region. Around 19:50, an Opel Astra vehicle traveling towards Yerevan on the 88th km of the Yerevan-Gyumri highway, in the administrative area of Lanjik village, veered off the roadway, crashed into the concrete barriers of a newly constructed road, and rolled over several times, ending up in the newly paved section of the road.
According to photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan from the scene, three individuals were injured in the accident, two of whom have been diagnosed as critically injured and have been transported to Gyumri Medical Center. The first responders included citizens and firefighters from the Maralik Fire and Rescue Squad of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, who arrived swiftly at the scene. Medical personnel also acted promptly, providing first aid on-site before the victims were taken to Gyumri Medical Center.
Officers from the 2nd Battalion of the Road Police's 2nd Command also arrived quickly, led by Battalion Commander Vache Malakyan and Squad Commander Levon Mikayelyan. An operative group from the Ani Division of the Police also arrived, led by the duty officer. Senior investigators Nairi Gasparyan and Davit Asatryan of the same battalion were also present; however, upon the directive of the Shirak regional prosecutor, an investigative group from the Investigative Committee of Armenia, headed by senior investigators Artush Harutyunyan and Armen Grigoryan, arrived at the scene.
In connection with the incident, a criminal case has been initiated under the second part of Article 242 of the RA Criminal Code, as per the decision of A. Harutyunyan. The vehicle is being moved to the designated holding area of the Ani Division of the Police. The police and investigative divisions are working to ascertain the identities of the driver, the deceased, and the injured.
Witnesses at the scene stated that two of the injured were taken to the hospital by Road Police officers Mikhail Grigoryan and Argam Melikyan from the 2nd Battalion's 2nd Squad, who then returned to the scene and are currently providing increased surveillance services to prevent curious drivers from parking their vehicles at the site, allowing firefighters and investigators to carry out their work.
