Under Which Country's Flag Will Aronian Participate in the Grand Chess Tour?
Armenian chess leader Levon Aronian will participate in the Grand Chess Tour classical chess tournament, which starts in early June. The tournament kicks off on June 3 in Bucharest, Romania, and will conclude on June 15. Aronian will compete under the flag of Armenia.
Other participants in the opening round include former world championship contender Fabiano Caruana (USA), Anish Giri (Netherlands), Alexander Grischuk (Russia), Wesley So (USA), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan), Maxim Vachier-Lagrave (France), Richard Rapport (Hungary), and Constantin Lupulescu (Romania).
Aronian is a two-time World Cup winner (2005 and 2017) and has been a crucial member of the Armenian national team, winning the 37th, 38th, and 40th Chess Olympiads, as well as the 2011 World Team Championship and the 1999 European Team Championship. He is a multiple winner of strong tournaments, including the FIDE Grand Prix, and a four-time champion of the Wijk aan Zee tournament (2007, 2008, 2012, and 2014). He also won the Grand Slam of Bilbao in 2009 and 2013, and he is the 2009 World Champion in rapid chess, the 2006 and 2007 World Champion in Fischer Random Chess, and the 2010 World Champion in blitz chess. He was also the champion of Armenia in 2002.
