EU Urges Armenia and Azerbaijan to Refrain from Further Deployment of Military Force and Actions

The European Union urges Armenia and Azerbaijan to refrain from further deployment of military forces and actions. This was stated by Peter Stano, the Chief Spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

“The recent developments along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border are dangerous and concerning. Immediate steps must be taken to de-escalate tensions. The European Union calls on both sides to refrain from further deployments of military forces and actions. All parties should withdraw to their positions held before May 12, and both sides must engage in negotiations regarding the delimitation and demarcation of the border. We continue to call on Azerbaijan to release all prisoners of war and individuals held in captivity without delay. We welcome all efforts aimed at de-escalation of tensions, including proposals regarding potential international monitoring missions,” the EU spokesperson stated.

He added that the EU is ready to provide expert capabilities and assist in the implementation of border delimitation and demarcation efforts, as well as support necessary confidence-building mechanisms to move towards lasting peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus.
