Boundary Demarcation and Delimitation with Azerbaijan Concerns Us All, Tatoyan

The boundary sections with Azerbaijan in Gegharkunik and Syunik, which involve the security zone or security measures at the expense of Armenian territory, will lead to new violations of the rights of border residents. This was stated by Armenia's Human Rights Defender, Arman Tatoyan, on his Facebook page.

“If this also pertains to the entire contact line with Azerbaijan, it will cause massive violations of rights and potentially new displacements, as the so-called ‘Azerbaijani’ parts of the border extend into Armenian communities or very close to them, affecting legally owned lands of the people. We must not forget that boundary demarcation and delimitation with Azerbaijan directly concern all of us, every person living in Armenia, and the vital rights of the entire Armenian people — the rights to life and existence, national and personal dignity, mental peace and physical security, the pursuit of happiness, and many other rights.

Boundary demarcation and delimitation can take decades. The rights of border residents cannot remain violated for decades, and the lives and safety of the people cannot be seriously endangered. Therefore, until these processes are completed, a security zone must be established for the purpose of guaranteeing people's rights during this period. Ultimately, it is an international requirement that demarcation and delimitation are not legitimate if they disrupt the normal life of the border population, disregarding human rights and the rule of law,” wrote Tatoyan.
