Video: Being Armenian is Sufficient for Obtaining Armenian Citizenship, Kocharyan

The first constitution of Armenia prohibited dual citizenship. During the initial reforms, this prohibition was lifted, and citizenship was granted through a relatively simplified process. Not being a citizen of the country and participating in national elections of that country presents a somewhat controversial issue. The election of local government bodies is different. If you have resident status, participating in elections is not an issue.

This was stated today, on May 24, by the second President of Armenia and leader of the ‘Armenia’ bloc, Robert Kocharyan. “Now there is even another problem. An individual with Armenian citizenship residing in another country does not have the right to vote. Previously, such voting was organized within the premises of our consulates. I can definitely promise that the process of obtaining citizenship will be simplified and will last only a few months. It is incomprehensible to me why it takes so long – three years are spent verifying whether you are Armenian or not. Being Armenian is sufficient for obtaining Armenian citizenship,” he stated.
