Soldier Fires Upon Himself with AKM-Type Assault Rifle: Investigative Committee Details

The case concerning the death of conscript soldier Mher Karenov Hovhannisyan has led to a criminal investigation initiated by the Military Investigative Main Department of the Republic of Armenia Investigative Committee under Article 360.1, Part 1 of the RA Criminal Code (Causing a Soldier's Death through Negligence).

This information was shared by the press service of the RA Investigative Committee.

According to preliminary data obtained during the investigation, the incident occurred today, May 25, at approximately 12:55 PM in the military unit’s armory. The soldier fired a shot at his own head using an AKM-type rifle.

Hovhannisyan was transported to the Noyemberyan Medical Center, where his death was registered.

The investigation is ongoing, with necessary investigative and procedural actions being taken to ensure a comprehensive, complete, and objective examination of the incident.

It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia announced the soldier's death today, indicating that the body of Private Mher Hovhannisyan (born 2001, drafted on January 20, 2021, from the RA Defense Forces Military Unit KGD-3 in Gegharkunik) was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
