If the Government Is Not Fighting Against the Invading Turk in Syunik, Should the Russian Say 'No, Shall We Fight?' - Abovyan
Russia, being Armenia's strategic partner, primarily acts based on the decisions of the Armenian authorities. This opinion was expressed by Gagik Tsarukyan Bloc MP Arman Abovyan during a National Assembly session, addressing the claims that Russia has not taken appropriate steps to resolve the situation in Syunik.
“The influx of anti-Russian sentiments compels us to remind about a couple of things that those generating anti-Russian theses tend to forget. For some reason, a thought is instilled in people that Russia did not come and did not protect us, that it took measures that were mild and did not correspond to certain obligations. That is not true. If the government decides that we should not fight against the invading Turk, does anyone expect that the Russian will say, 'No, we must go, shall we fight?'” said Abovyan.
According to him, the government has chosen this path, and Russia, stating that it is Armenia's partner, supports the course chosen by Armenia.
It is worth noting that yesterday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko announced that the doors of the CSTO should always be open to all states, including Azerbaijan. Abovyan, commenting on the speculation regarding this topic, stated that Russia has clearly indicated that Azerbaijan could apply for CSTO membership if it resolves its relations with Armenia.
“In the context of all these processes, generating sentiments that jeopardize our relationship with our strategic partner... one should simply ask, who benefits from this? Generating anti-Russian theses directly endangers the security of Armenia,” concluded Abovyan.
Lilit Makunts, the head of the My Step faction, also expressed hope that both the CSTO and Russia would respond regarding the issue of Syunik. She called on the public not to bring certain prevailing sentiments into the parliament, speaking about the interests of Armenia.
