Aliyev Calls Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Discuss Situation at Armenia-Azerbaijan Border

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has called the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to discuss the situation at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. According to reports from Azerbaijani media, Aliyev informed Tokayev about the recent events taking place along the borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In this context, Aliyev stated that the process of border demarcation is currently underway and that the "Armenian side is responding inadequately to this process." According to Aliyev, no clashes have occurred at the border, the situation is stable, and negotiations are ongoing.

Acting Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, also had a phone conversation with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on May 16, condemning Azerbaijan's encroachment on Armenia's sovereign territory and emphasizing the importance of coordinating the positions of CSTO partners to address the issue.

On May 12, some groups of Azerbaijani armed forces crossed the state border of Armenia and undertook actions directed at encircling Lake Sevan in Syunik. The Armenian armed forces carried out tactical counteractions. As a result of the tactical counteractions by the Armenian forces, Azerbaijani troops positioned in some adjacent areas have retreated from the positions they occupied. Meanwhile, about 250 representatives of the Azerbaijani armed forces continue to be inside the territory of Armenia, in certain areas of Syunik and Gegharkunik.

On May 14, Pashinyan officially appealed to the current chairman of the CSTO Collective Security Council, the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, to initiate urgent consultations to coordinate the positions of CSTO member states within the framework of Article 2 of the collective security treaty of May 15, 1992, and to take measures to eliminate the emerging threat.
