German Citizen Faces 2 Years in Prison for Writing About Genocide

A court in Istanbul has filed a lawsuit against Deniz Yücel, a correspondent for the German newspaper "Die Welt," based on publications made online concerning the Armenian Genocide and the Kurdish issue.

In this regard, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has prepared an indictment and requested permission to initiate an investigation against Yücel. The journalist is accused under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, which pertains to publicly denigrating the Turkish state and the Turkish people.

He faces a prison sentence ranging from 6 months to 2 years. It is worth noting that Deniz Yücel, a dual citizen of Turkey and Germany, spent 1 year in detention in Turkey without an indictment.
