The U.S. Provides Military Aid to Azerbaijan on One Condition: Suren Sargsyan
International relations expert Suren Sargsyan wrote on his Facebook page: “What purpose and under what condition has the U.S. been providing military assistance to Azerbaijan since 2001?
The military assistance to Azerbaijan is given for the following purposes and conditions:
Purpose 1: To support the U.S. efforts to combat international terrorism.
Purpose 2: To support the operational readiness of U.S. armed forces or coalition partners to counter international terrorism.
Purpose 3: For the security of Azerbaijan’s borders (maritime borders with Iran).
Condition 1: The assistance must not disrupt or obstruct ongoing efforts for peaceful resolution of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and cannot be used for offensive purposes against Armenia.
Consider that the 907th amendment, adopted during George H.W. Bush's administration, was bypassed ten years later under George W. Bush for the purpose of combating terrorism. Also note that the international situation has changed, and there is fertile ground for us to work towards canceling this cooperation.
