Why the US President Recognized the Armenian Genocide: Pashinyan Highlights Four Factors

The Acting Prime Minister and candidate for Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, addressed the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the US President during a special session of the National Assembly in response to MP Arman Babajanyan's question. He noted that if this acknowledgment had happened 7-10 years ago, we would have heard constantly about how the skilled foreign policy of Armenia made the impossible possible, but now this is not the case.

“On the contrary, the authorities were doing everything to ensure that this fact did not occur, but despite the pro-Turkish officials... why did the US President recognize the Armenian Genocide? I believe there is one long-term factor, one medium-term factor, and two short-term factors:

The long-term factor is undoubtedly the persistent efforts of the Armenian community in the US and all diaspora organizations. The medium-term factor is Turkey's regional politics and the dissonance that has emerged between Turkey and the US. The first short-term factor is the 44-day war and Turkey's overt and active involvement in it, and the second is the fact that Armenia is a democratic country. These four factors are, in my opinion, what led to the unprecedented and historical decision by the US President,” Pashinyan stated.

The acting Prime Minister emphasized that the ongoing situation is related to the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh and its resolution. “If we add to the fact of the US President’s recognition of the Genocide the comments made by the Russian President regarding the origins of the issue and the security of the Armenian population in Artsakh, the remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron, and the processes that took place in France, including after the 44-day war, along with the second statement made by the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group after the war, we will see that all these processes are deeply interconnected,” Pashinyan noted.
