We Will Not Allow the Armenian Genocide to Be Forgotten: Zatulin
Konstantin Zatulin, the first deputy head of the State Duma's CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Compatriots Relations Committee, has sent a special message on the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
“Today we bow our heads in memory of the genocide against the Armenian population carried out by the Ottoman Empire during the early years of the last century—during World War I,” Zatulin stated, as reported by Armenpress.
He recalled that the Turks exterminated Armenian soldiers serving in the army, representatives of the intelligentsia, clergy, and businessmen.
“The ordinary villagers who had lived on historical Armenian land for centuries were almost entirely annihilated and driven into the internal desert areas of Turkey. More than a million people perished, and the death toll could have been much higher had Armenians in certain localities not taken up arms in resistance and had Russia not accepted refugees and displaced persons. This crime was committed by the Young Turks, the leaders of the then Ottoman Empire. Unfortunately, the current Turkish authorities deny the fact of the genocide and show no remorse, despite the recognition of that genocide by a significant number of countries as the first large-scale genocide of modern history,” Zatulin said.
He proudly noted that it was his initiative that led the State Duma of Russia to adopt a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide in 1995. “Today, against the backdrop of events occurring in the South Caucasus, I once again call for solidarity, understanding that the pain of others is not someone else's. Especially when it comes to our compatriots, the Armenians,” Zatulin declared, emphasizing that they will never allow the Armenian Genocide to be forgotten.
