I Am Ashamed That the United Kingdom Has Yet to Recognize the Armenian Genocide - Baroness Caroline Cox

Baroness Caroline Cox, a member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom, has called for the UK to recognize the Armenian Genocide. “My first message is one of gratitude and appreciation to the Armenian people, who have always been champions of freedom for the world,” said Cox.

According to her, Armenians have remained committed to upholding universal values despite great sacrifices and immense suffering, living alongside neighbors who show no respect for human rights and democracy. “You are like a beacon of light in many dark parts of the world,” she noted.

Her second message is one of anger. “The international community continues to allow Turkey and Azerbaijan to act with impunity, violating human rights and committing massacres,” she declared. Cox spoke about three genocides, noting that the first occurred in the Ottoman Empire in 1915, while the other two were carried out against Artsakh during the periods of 1990-1994 and the end of the 2020 war. “The last war was full of war crimes. The independent international organization ‘Genocide Watch’ characterized the latest conflict as genocide,” she stated, emphasizing that while everyone commemorates the memory of the Armenian Genocide, new genocides continue to occur in the world.

“I repeatedly call upon the government of the United Kingdom to recognize the Genocide. I am ashamed that it has not yet happened,” stressed Baroness Cox. She expressed satisfaction that Wales, part of the United Kingdom, has already recognized the Armenian Genocide. Furthermore, there is a monument in Cardiff dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

“My third message is one of love and intimacy. I have had the honor of visiting your country 85 times. Many of these visits took place during previous wars in Artsakh. Together with my colleague David Thomas, I also visited during the most recent war. We always return, captivated by your people, your courage, your hospitality, your culture, and your commitment to democracy. It is hard to think of another country of similar size that has contributed as much to the collective human civilization in the fields of art, culture, education, and others. I promise that we will always stand by your side. We will do everything possible to achieve the justice you deserve,” concluded Baroness Caroline Cox.
