Armenia's Permanent Representative to the UN Sends Letter to Guterres Regarding Aliyev's Threats of Force Against Armenia
Armenia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Mher Margaryan, sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on April 22, addressing threats of the use of force made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a speech on April 20, as well as territorial ambitions against Armenia. This was reported by the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The letter draws the attention of the UN Secretary-General to the violence and anti-Armenian hate speech propagated by Azerbaijan, which poses a threat not only to the Armenian people's right to live in their homeland but also to the peace and security of the entire region.
The Permanent Representative emphasized that this clearly demonstrates that Azerbaijan's aggression unleashed during the global pandemic was an attempt to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through the force of arms. Ambassador Margaryan pointed out that Azerbaijan's territorial claims and threats of applying force to create the so-called “Zangezur corridor” are bankrupt from both a historical and international law perspective, and such rhetoric contradicts the provisions of the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020.
It was highlighted that Azerbaijan continues to violate international humanitarian law by holding numerous Armenian servicemen captive and propagating violence and racism against ethnic Armenians in Baku's “park,” which is a clear imitation of Nazi-era propaganda.
“Armenia condemns the provocative rhetoric, racist ideology, and threats of the use of force, which could lead to destabilization in the region, and reaffirms the necessity for the full, immediate, and conscientious implementation of commitments under international humanitarian law, particularly regarding the release of prisoners of war, hostages, and other detained persons,” stated Mher Margaryan.
