UN Believes the Fact of the Armenian Genocide 'Should Be Determined by a Court'
The UN states that the fact of genocide 'should be determined by the appropriate judicial body.' This was announced by the official spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, during a press briefing, commenting on the plans of the United States to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide that occurred in the early 20th century in the Ottoman Empire, TASS reports.
'The fact of genocide should be determined by the appropriate court, if we are talking about the UN's position,' he said. Dujarric noted that he would not comment or assess the events that took place in the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century since they occurred before the establishment of the global organization.
According to The Wall Street Journal, US President Joe Biden is expected to announce the decision to recognize the Armenian Genocide on Saturday, April 24, when Armenia will commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Sources for the publication emphasize that a final decision has not yet been made, and Biden may limit himself to a formal statement.
