Why Chicken Meat Prices Have Increased in Armenia

Instead, the production volumes of pork and sheep meat have increased. In January-February of this year, the production volumes of pork have risen by 0.2 percent, while sheep meat has also increased by 0.2 percent. Meanwhile, the production volumes of poultry have decreased by 1.8 percent. In the first two months of this year, Armenia produced 1 million 857 thousand 500 tons of poultry meat.

According to poultry farmers, due to the Artsakh war, the import of chicks from Georgia, which was possible prior to September 2020, could not be organized, which has affected the production volumes of poultry meat. In addition, during the first two months of this year, the price of chicken meat has significantly increased. According to the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia, an 8.4 percent inflation has been recorded in this market. Furthermore, the prices of both imported and locally produced chicken meat have risen.

Experts state that the increase in imported poultry prices is due to the rising exchange rate of the dollar, while the price of local chicken meat has increased because the costs of both imported feed and utility rates for gas and electricity have also risen.
