US Presidential Administration Responds to Armenian Historians' Letter on Genocide
The office of US President Joe Biden has responded to a letter from Armenian historians regarding the use of the term genocide. This was reported by Ashot Melkonyan, the director of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
During a roundtable discussion titled 'Armenian Genocide: Turkey's Responsibility Yesterday and Today', Melkonyan revealed the content of the response received from the correspondence division of the US presidential administration. In the letter, the Biden-Harris administration thanked the Armenian historians for reaching out and for the provided information, appreciating every opportunity to engage with them.
'Our country faces numerous challenges, and letters like yours help us understand better how the Biden-Harris administration can be of assistance to you. We will carefully study the letter and will work towards following up,' Melkonyan quoted the White House response concerning the historians' letter.
According to Melkonyan, the letter from the Armenian Historians' Association and the academic community had reached the presidential residence through the efforts of genocide scholar Anahit Khosroyeva. Emphasizing the critical nature of the president's stance on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the US, the historians' association and the academic community wrote to Joe Biden to ensure that appropriate conclusions would be drawn regarding the use of the term genocide ahead of April 24.
Melkonyan noted that the response from the letter could raise expectations that the US at the presidential level will use the term genocide.
