Two 18-Year-Old Residents of Yerevan Caught Attempting to Steal Railway Cables
As a result of measures taken by the Security Service of the South Caucasus Railway, two 18-year-old residents of Yerevan were caught attempting to steal communication cables in the Yerevan-Noragavit section. This information has been reported by the Press Service of the South Caucasus Railway.
“On March 23, the duty officer at the Yerevan station reported to the Security Service that the communication had been interrupted in the Yerevan-Noragavit section. Meanwhile, security personnel on duty at the scene noticed and apprehended the two suspicious teenagers, who were later handed over to the criminal investigation department of the Erebuni Police,” the statement noted.
The identity of the suspects was later established, revealing that one of them had previously been convicted for a similar crime. The arrested individuals confessed that they had committed this theft, as well as the theft of 30 meters of cable in the Yerevan-Noragavit section on March 19.
It should be noted that since the beginning of the year, the number of external impacts on the railway system in the South Caucasus Railway has increased. In January through March, 35 such incidents were recorded, which is three times higher than the same period in 2020. These mainly consist of thefts and attempted thefts of electrical and communication cables, as well as damages to the property, infrastructure, and rolling stock of the South Caucasus Railway, which directly threatens the safety of train operations.
“The theft of railway property, which belongs to the Republic of Armenia, poses a significant danger to the safety of train operations. Just a few meters of cable theft can lead to loss of communication in the yards and sections, making it impossible to control train movements, which in turn can lead to dangerous incidents and accidents,” the company emphasized.
The company is confident that a responsible attitude from the public towards railway infrastructure will help ensure an adequate level of safety for train operations, as well as the protection of the company’s and citizens’ property.
