Who Will Lead the GOP List? Partnership with Kocharian Almost Excluded
The Republican Party of Armenia (GPA) faces an uncertain situation. On one hand, they are unclear about the format of their participation in the elections, while on the other hand, they have begun preparatory work by activating their territorial structures and updating the GOP lists.
Sources indicate that the party has put pressure on the GOP president to ensure their involvement in the process, emphasizing that if they do not participate, they will be completely excluded from the proceedings. The key question remains how they will participate, especially if Robert Kocharian enters the fray.
There is almost a consensus that a coalition with Kocharian is unlikely, and they will go it alone. However, many within the GOP do not hide their sympathy for Kocharian and are willing to work in his favor, particularly those who have been dissatisfied with Serzh Sargsyan since the last elections.
Another uncertainty is who will head the GOP list. Although Serzh Sargsyan has stated that he is not leaving the trench, he does not seek an active role, for instance, being the first on the list—unless he changes his mind at the last moment. In this regard, the GOP faces a challenging decision regarding who to place at the top of their list and who their candidate for prime minister will be.
Vigen Sargsyan, who went to study in the United States, has been absent from the country and cannot participate in these elections. Arpine Hovhannisyan has suspended her membership, and it is rumored she may join Kocharian's list. There is significant negativity towards Armen Ashotyan.
In short, discussions are ongoing.
