No Clarity on Timing for Early Elections, Says Alen Simonyan

According to the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, many opposition parties, including 'Bright Armenia', which have expressed support for holding early elections, are actually against this scenario. 'The LHK believes that elections should not be held and will find numerous reasons to avoid early elections, simply using this period to emphasize its position,' Simonyan stated during a conversation with reporters today.

When asked why he makes such claims, Alen Simonyan elaborated: 'I am quite familiar with their modus operandi. A scenario is presented, and then they try to evade based on conditions and causes regarding the declaration or situation. This is a known tactic.'

According to the Deputy Speaker, about 80% of opposition parties are against holding early elections because they know that many of them would not cross the electoral threshold as a result. Alen Simonyan noted that there is no clarity regarding the timing of early elections. 'Discussions are taking place about the deadlines; we want the timelines to also be suitable for the opposition forces,' Simonyan announced, adding that there are also questions related to the Electoral Code.

'We have repeatedly stated that the proportional electoral system needs to be changed. Now we need to discuss and understand what is more important today: can we postpone the elections and conduct them under a new code, or should we hold the elections sooner under the old legislation? These are the questions we are discussing with our partners, who will most likely participate in the elections,' he noted.
