Arman Arakelyan, Convicted for Killing an Azerbaijani in Russia, Finally Transferred to Armenia
Arman Arakelyan, an ethnic Armenian sentenced for killing an Azerbaijani during a dispute at a restaurant in Pushkin, St. Petersburg, was finally transferred to Armenia yesterday to serve the remainder of his sentence in his homeland.
Since 2017, the issue of Arakelyan's extradition to Armenia was handled by Arthur Dashyan, a lawyer based in Russia. He told Hraparak.am that their struggle, which lasted almost four years, has finally borne fruit as Russian authorities agreed to hand Arakelyan over to Armenian law enforcement so he can serve his sentence in Armenia, where he was born in Ejmiatsin and where his family resides. They had been deprived of the opportunity to visit Arakelyan.
Prior to his transfer, he was serving his sentence in a prison in Murmansk, Russia, where his life was potentially at risk due to threats from Azerbaijanis seeking revenge following recent events.
