Armen Sarkissian Appeals to the Constitutional Court

The President of the Republic, Armen Sarkissian, has appealed to the Constitutional Court.

According to a statement issued by the President's office, it is noted that "the President, guided by point 4 of part 1 of Article 169 of the Constitution, has submitted an application to the Constitutional Court requesting a determination regarding the compliance of the law on military service and the status of servicemen, adopted on November 15, 2017, with the Constitution."

The submission of the application is also linked to existing issues in the application of the said law, which became particularly apparent following the Prime Minister's initiative to dismiss the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia, Onik Gasparyan, and the subsequent constitutional and legal processes.

The Constitutional Court has the authority to conduct a comprehensive and systemically interconnected examination and make a decision within the framework of its legally assigned powers. The decisions of the Constitutional Court and possible measures being taken may have a serious impact on the interpretation and application of the aforementioned law concerning previous decisions and the ongoing and future processes related to the existing situation.

The President expresses hope that a relevant decision will be made as soon as possible, bringing legal clarity and contributing to resolving the current crisis.
