Armenia's Ombudsman's Urgent Call for the Return of Armenian Prisoners Held in Azerbaijan

The Human Rights Defender of Armenia, Arman Tatoyan, presented an urgent report on March 8 during a discussion organized by the UK Armenian Assembly, focusing on the return of Armenian detainees, including soldiers and civilians, held in Azerbaijan. This was reported by the Armenian Assembly of Great Britain.

The Ombudsman’s office states that the meeting was attended by the British Ambassador to Armenia, John Gallagher, the Chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Armenia representing all parties in the UK Parliament, Tim Loughton, and others.

Arman Tatoyan emphasized that Azerbaijani authorities are artificially prolonging and politicizing the process to inflict psychological suffering on the Armenian public and especially the families of the detainees, aiming to create tension in the country.

The Ombudsman elaborated on the international humanitarian and human rights laws that require the immediate release and safe return of detainees. He noted that presenting them as 'terrorists' constitutes a gross violation of international humanitarian law and the rights of prisoners, as the context relates to an ongoing armed conflict.

He also provided information about war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Azerbaijani armed forces during the war, including beheadings, torture, and the humiliation of bodies.

Addressing the processes related to Armenia's borders, Arman Tatoyan introduced his new concept that proposes the establishment of a demilitarized security zone in Syunik to ensure the safety of residents. He presented specific evidence and facts that underpin this new approach.

The Human Rights Defender noted, “The processes related to the borders have violated and seriously endangered the rights of residents living along the borders, disrupted their normal lives, and continue to cause anxiety for the inhabitants of the villages.”
