The Protection of Human Rights and Security: An Interconnected Relationship

Human rights, democracy, and security are interlinked, stated the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, Arman Tatoyan, on his Facebook page.

“The more protected human rights are and the more established democracy is, the stronger the security is; conversely, violations of human rights and disruptions to democracy endanger security. This fundamental principle also applies to processes related to borders,” Tatoyan noted.

He emphasized that violations of human rights in Armenia’s Syunik region, as well as ongoing threats to those rights in connection with border processes, must be eliminated, and a security zone should be established.

This statement is part of a segment from the Human Rights Defender's press conference concerning the key principles from an international legal perspective regarding human rights within the context of border processes, as well as the human rights issues recorded in Syunik region.

The Human Rights Defender's special report on this issue is summarized for the purpose of presenting to international organizations.
