Azerbaijani Soldiers Deface and Destroy the Monument of Hovhannes Tevosyan in Shushi

Azerbaijani soldiers continue to deface Armenian monuments in areas under Azerbaijan's control. A video circulating online shows Azerbaijani soldiers dismantling the monument of Hovhannes (Ivan) Tevosyan, reports Sputnik Armenia.

Tevosyan was born in Shushi to a family of tailors. A few years later, the family fled Shushi and settled in Baku. He completed his studies at an Orthodox parish school and a three-year trade school in Baku. After graduating, he worked at the Volga-Baku Oil Company as an operator, accountant, and assistant to the accountant, while also studying at a gymnasium in the evenings.

From 1948 to 1949, he held the position of Minister of Metallurgical Industry of the USSR. From 1949 to 1956, he was the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, while also serving as the Minister of Ferrous Metallurgy of the USSR from 1950 to 1953. From 1956 until his death, he was the Soviet ambassador to Japan.

It should be noted that this is not the first case of Azerbaijani vandalism against Armenian historical and cultural monuments. In November 2020, Azerbaijani soldiers destroyed the dome and bell tower of the Green Chapel in Shushi. On November 16, they defiled and partially destroyed the Holy Mother of God Church in the village of Mekhakavan, also tearing down the cross placed on it. The monument of Vazgen Sarkisyan was also desecrated.
