What Was the Level of Poverty in Armenia Under Four Leaders? An Economist Compares the Figures
During Robert Kocharyan's tenure, the poverty level decreased from 53.5% to 27.6%. Under Serzh Sargsyan, it dropped from 34.1% to 23.5%, while during Nikol Pashinyan's leadership, according to the new methodology introduced in 2019, the poverty level increased to 26.4%. This information was shared on Facebook by Suren Parsyan, head of the Economic Research Office of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau.
"The poverty level during the leadership of four Armenian leaders has varied significantly. Over the past 30 years, the World Bank's poverty assessment methodology has changed four times, complicating the comparison of poverty levels throughout the tenures of these leaders. Nevertheless, the 2009 methodology allows us to analyze the dynamics of poverty levels during the recent leadership. Specifically, during Robert Kocharyan's presidency, the poverty level decreased from 53.5% to 27.6%. Under Serzh Sargsyan, it fell from 34.1% to 23.5%, while during Nikol Pashinyan's period, according to the new methodology introduced in 2019, the poverty rate has risen to 26.4%," Parsyan noted.
