My Step Members Oppose Returning to Semi-Presidential System: 'Hraparak'
MP Hovik Aghazaryan from the 'My Step' faction disagrees with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's proposal to return to a semi-presidential system from the parliamentary system. 'The parliamentary system is the most suitable system for countries like ours. Of course, considering the difficulties we are going through now, we can draw conclusions and make some changes, but I have been and remain a supporter of the parliamentary system,' he stated.
When asked why Nikol Pashinyan wants to revert to the former system, perhaps to not be dependent on parliament as he currently is, the MP said he cannot speculate on Pashinyan's intentions and will express his opinion when the discussion takes place. 'Whenever we have discussions, I will defend my viewpoint regardless,' he added.
Interestingly, within the current situation, even the 'My Step' faction considers conducting a constitutional referendum unrealistic, facing serious doubts about their ability to secure 650,000 votes in favor.
It is worth noting that the question posed in the referendum is accepted if more than half of the participants vote in favor, but not less than one-quarter of eligible voters. The number of voters before the snap parliamentary elections in 2018 was 2,575,939, meaning that 644,000 people need to vote in favor for the governance system to change.
