Tens of Thousands Still Missing Due to War in Syria
Tens of thousands of citizens have been reported missing during the decade-long civil war in Syria, with many arbitrarily detained. This was announced following a United Nations investigation, as reported by the BBC.
Thousands more have been subjected to torture or killed in prisons. The data was published in a new report aimed at investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity. Victims and witnesses describe these experiences as "inconceivable suffering," which also includes instances of sexual violence against 11-year-old girls and boys.
The report emphasizes that this is a "national trauma." Since the onset of the Syrian war in 2011, at least 380,000 lives have been lost. The conflict has displaced half of Syria's population, with nearly 6 million people becoming refugees and leaving their homeland.
